It was Toyota heaven today on the south side of Brisbane for the annual All Toyota Day, this year held at the Toyota Qld headquarters at Acacia Ridge. Being an owner of an imported and somewhat rare Toyota myself, this was one of the more enjoyable events we've covered this year.
Toyota owners may not seem as 'enthusiastic' as the owners of the other two big Aussies, but they certainly came out in force for the show. It was great to see the Toyota company supporting the show, not only supplying the venue, but also the lucky door prizes, and a great display with cutaways of the new Celica VVTi engine and the sequential MR2 gearbox, both of which attracted a lot of attention.
Vehicles on display ranged from the very first Toyota imported to Australia, a very old Land Cruiser, right through to the latest imported MR2 and Supra turbo coupes. Engine conversions were big this year, the strangest being an early Corona powered by a Mazda MX5 engine running a Jap Corolla supercharger! Anther goodie was a late model Toyota turbo six shoehorned into an early Celica, and a similar Celica fitted with an original HKS turbo kit.
Despite seeming to be the most popular modified Toyotas around Brisbane, the Corollas were well outnumbered by the rest. The group from twincam16.com had a few nice examples on display, including a 4AGE 20v converted AE92, and a supercharged 4AGZE equipped AE86. Best sleeper of the day went to their KE70 Corolla sedan fitted with a modified Nissan SR20DET turbo engine!
It's great to see there is a strong (and growing) Toyota following in a county renowned for sticking to the local product. Next year we may lose Neal Bates' WRC Corolla from our national rally championship, but come Melbourne in March next year, the brand new Toyota Formula One cars will give us something to cheer about!
